Separate claims from established facts
Track who says something and how the report qualifies it.

You can answer in English. Keep the translation closed for your first attempt. Dictionary use is compatible with independent reading; a successful exercise is not a fluency certificate.
Read before the explanation
Read for the main meaning first. Then consider this question: Can the final project cost be stated as 250,000 euros? Is extra funding confirmed?
First reading · Original course text · about 68 words
Le coût du projet
Selon la mairie, la nouvelle salle coûtera 200 000 euros. Une association affirme pourtant que certains travaux ne sont pas inclus dans cette somme. Le coût total pourrait atteindre 250 000 euros, estime sa présidente. Un élu aurait annoncé un financement supplémentaire lors d’une réunion privée. Interrogée lundi, la mairie n’a pas confirmé cette annonce. Les documents publiés portent sur le premier budget. Aucun devis définitif n’est disponible.

English reading, after your attempt
According to the council, the new room will cost 200,000 euros. An association nevertheless claims that some work is not included in that sum. The total cost could reach 250,000 euros, its president estimates. An elected official reportedly announced additional funding during a private meeting. Asked on Monday, the council did not confirm that announcement. The published documents concern the initial budget. No final quotation is available.

Separate the report from its content
Selon la mairie means according to the council. La mairie affirme que introduces the council’s assertion. A reporter can accurately report that assertion without having independently verified its content. Estime often signals an estimate or judgment; confirme is stronger wording but still belongs to an identified speaker.
Separate the speaker, the claim, and the evidence
Attribution means identifying whose statement you are reading. In this fictional news example, Selon le syndicat, l'usine manque de personnel, le syndicat means the union, l'usine the factory, and manque de personnel lacks staff. The opening phrase places the staffing claim under the union's responsibility. The sentence does not say that a reporter counted the workers. You can understand the French accurately while leaving the staffing situation unverified. Attribution concerns the structure of the report, not a judgment that the source is dishonest.
Compare Le syndicat affirme que l'usine manque de personnel. Here affirme means asserts, and que introduces the content asserted. There are two statements to keep apart. The union made an assertion, and the factory lacks staff. A report can present the first as an event while attributing the second. Removing the reporting words changes that relationship. An English summary saying only that the factory lacks staff has silently adopted the union's assertion. It no longer reports the same limited information as the French sentence.
Assertion is not observation
French wording
Reading consequence
L'usine manque de personnel.
Staff shortage presented directly.
Selon le syndicat, l'usine manque de personnel.
Shortage attributed to the union.
La direction conteste ce manque de personnel.
Management disputes the shortage.
Each fictional sentence assigns a different responsibility. Keep the reporting act separate from the staffing situation instead of ranking sources as automatically reliable or unreliable.
Reporting verbs also identify the kind of statement. In the fictional sentence La direction estime que dix recrutements suffiraient, la direction means management, recrutements hirings, and suffiraient would be enough. Estime presents an assessment rather than a completed count of new employees. Compare La direction annonce dix recrutements, which presents an announcement of ten hirings. Neither sentence says ten people have started work. The content after the reporting verb may describe a judgment, a plan, or an accomplished event, and those distinctions survive attribution.
A source may appear after its claim. Read Les effectifs sont suffisants, affirme la direction. Les effectifs means staffing levels, and suffisants sufficient. The final affirme la direction assigns the preceding judgment to management. French can place the reporting verb before its subject in this position. Do not stop at the comma and treat the opening as an unqualified finding. This word order is common in reporting because the claim comes first, but it leaves the source relationship intact. Read through the final attribution before drafting a summary.
Direct quotation gives the speaker's wording, whereas indirect reporting gives its content through the reporter's sentence. In La déléguée dit : « Nous demandons une enquête. », la déléguée is the representative and une enquête an investigation. Nous belongs to the quoted speaker's group. In La déléguée dit que le syndicat demande une enquête, the union is named instead. Neither version establishes wrongdoing. Calling for an investigation is an action distinct from establishing the conclusion that an investigation might eventually support. Quotation marks do not remove that distinction.
Whose words and whose pronoun?
Direct quotation
La déléguée dit : « Nous demandons une enquête. »
La déléguée dit :
Speaker and reporting act
« Nous demandons
Quoted group makes the request
une enquête. »
Requested investigation
Indirect reporting
La déléguée dit que le syndicat demande une enquête.
La déléguée dit
Speaker and reporting act
que le syndicat demande
Union is subject inside reported content
une enquête.
Requested investigation
The quoted first-person pronoun belongs to the representative and her group. Indirect reporting can name that group without making the reporter a participant.
An attribution can extend over several sentences, but its boundary is not mechanically fixed. In a fictional paragraph beginning Selon le syndicat, a following sentence may continue the union's account or return to the reporter's description. Look for a new named speaker, quotation boundaries, or explicit wording such as ajoute-t-il, meaning he adds. If the text leaves responsibility unclear, preserve that uncertainty rather than assigning every nearby sentence to one institution. Attribution depends on the paragraph's organization as well as on individual reporting words.
Read conditional reporting in context
Le chantier coûterait deux millions can distance an unconfirmed estimate. Aurait annoncé is a past conditional: allegedly or reportedly announced in an appropriate news context. A conditional may also be hypothetical or future-in-the-past, so inspect the surrounding source attribution rather than treating the form as a universal uncertainty label.
Distinguish three reasons for a conditional form
The conditional is a verb form, not a single level of confidence. Consider this fictional report, Selon une salariée, l'atelier fermerait en juin. Une salariée means an employee, l'atelier the workshop, and fermerait would close. With the attributed report, the conditional can distance the closure claim from the reporter's own commitment. The appropriate reading is a reportedly planned or possible June closure, not a completed closure. The source phrase and reporting context establish this interpretation together. The ending alone does not establish it.
Now compare Si les commandes diminuaient, l'atelier fermerait. Les commandes means orders, and diminuaient decreased in this hypothetical construction. The closure is the result of an imagined decline in orders. No employee is reporting a hidden announcement here. The si clause supplies a condition, not a source. An English account saying the workshop is reportedly closing would introduce an attribution that this sentence lacks. First identify what makes the closure relevant, a source's information or a hypothetical circumstance, before deciding how to render the conditional.
Same form, different relationship
French wording
Reading consequence
Si les commandes diminuaient, l'atelier fermerait.
Hypothetical outcome.
Elle a dit que l'atelier fermerait.
Future viewed from her past statement.
Selon une salariée, l'atelier fermerait.
Distanced attributed report.
These fictional contexts explain the conditional differently. A condition, an earlier speech event, and a distanced report should not collapse into one English claim.
A third fictional sentence is En mars, la directrice a dit que l'atelier fermerait en juin. La directrice means the director. The conditional places June's closure after the March statement. This is future-in-the-past, a future viewed from an earlier moment. The sentence reports what the director said would happen; it does not tell you whether the closure eventually occurred. Yet the conditional here need not be a journalistic warning about an unreliable source. Its immediate explanation is the relationship between the earlier statement and the later planned event.
The past conditional contains an auxiliary, a helping verb, in the conditional plus a past participle. In Une responsable aurait refusé l'accord, une responsable is an official, refusé refused, and l'accord the agreement. In an unconfirmed fictional news report, aurait refusé distances a claimed earlier refusal. Keep the two words together as the event verb group. Reading aurait merely as would have possession leaves refusé disconnected. The compound locates a purported accomplished event, but its grammar does not independently prove that event occurred.
Compare the past hypothesis Sans cette aide, l'atelier aurait fermé. Sans cette aide means without this assistance. The conditional imagines what would have happened without help. It does not report an alleged real closure. The same compound shape therefore supports different readings in different constructions. If help actually kept the workshop operating, the imagined closure is a counterfactual outcome. Do not infer that every past conditional names an event believed to have happened. Look for an explicit or implied hypothetical circumstance before choosing a report-like English rendering.
Reported event versus imagined outcome
Distanced fictional report
Selon une salariée, l'atelier aurait fermé en juin.
Selon une salariée,
Source of the claim
l'atelier
Subject of reported closure
aurait fermé
Past conditional event group
en juin.
Reported closure time
Hypothetical outcome
Sans cette aide, l'atelier aurait fermé.
Sans cette aide,
Imagined absence of assistance
l'atelier
Subject of imagined closure
aurait fermé.
Past conditional outcome
Both sentences contain a past conditional. The source phrase supports reported information in the first; the missing-assistance scenario supports a hypothetical outcome in the second.
Some contexts support more than one nuance. A speaker reporting an earlier forecast may also distance themselves from it. A sentence with fermerait and little surrounding text may leave that distinction unresolved. Recover the reporting date, the event date, and any si clause before forcing a choice. The task is to state the strongest interpretation the passage warrants, not to attach one permanent translation to an ending. Conditional recognition helps preserve uncertainty precisely because it requires attention to the surrounding argument and source relationship.
Preserve qualifications in a summary
Provisoire means provisional, environ approximately, au moins at least, and jusqu’à up to. Selon deux témoins is not a statement that every witness agrees. A quotation records somebody’s words; it does not establish the truth of the quoted claim. Keep what is unknown visible.
Keep qualifications attached to their claims
A qualification limits how broadly or confidently a statement applies. In this fictional sentence, Selon la coopérative, environ quarante paniers ont été livrés, la coopérative means the cooperative, paniers baskets, and livrés delivered. Environ makes forty approximate. Selon la coopérative identifies the source of that approximate count. Dropping either phrase strengthens the claim in a different way. An exact count and an independently established count are separate matters. A number can be precise but attributed, or approximate but based on direct observation.
Bounds also differ from exact totals. Au moins quarante paniers means at least forty baskets, so the total may be higher. Jusqu'à quarante paniers means up to forty baskets, often a capacity or upper limit whose exact interpretation needs context. Une quarantaine de paniers is about forty baskets, not forty guaranteed deliveries. Read the noun and verb around the number. A storage limit, an order count, and a delivery count can all use forty while describing different facts. The expression's numerical shape alone cannot identify the measured event.
Four different limits on a count
French wording
Reading consequence
environ quarante paniers
Approximate count.
au moins quarante paniers
Lower bound, possibly more.
jusqu'à quarante paniers
Upper limit in its stated context.
un total provisoire de quarante paniers
Count may be revised.
Approximation, a lower bound, an upper bound, and a provisional status restrict a claim differently. None supplies an independent check of the fictional count.
Negation has a scope, the part of a statement it denies. Compare the fictional statements La coopérative ne confirme pas la livraison and La coopérative confirme que la livraison n'a pas eu lieu. La livraison is the delivery, and avoir lieu means take place. The first withholds confirmation; the second confirms nonoccurrence. They are not equivalent. A summary saying the delivery did not happen would overstate the first. Keep the negative attached to its actual verb, confirmation or occurrence, instead of moving it to whichever event seems most important.
A denial is also an attributed act. In La responsable dément une fermeture, dément means denies and une fermeture a closure. The text reports her denial; it does not automatically establish that the workshop will remain open. Likewise reconnaît means acknowledges and may present a concession, while précise means specifies or clarifies. These verbs frame a speaker's position. Their different tones matter, but none is a grammatical truth detector. Ask what proposition is asserted, denied, or clarified, and by whom, before deciding what the passage establishes independently.
Pronouns can hide a source change. In the fictional pair La coopérative consulte la mairie. Elle annonce un contrôle, consulte means consults and un contrôle an inspection. Both nouns are grammatically feminine, so elle could fit either institution. The most recent noun is not a guaranteed answer. A fuller paragraph might resolve the announcer through quotation or explicit repetition. If it does not, write that the institution is unclear. Grammatical gender narrows possible referents, but it cannot select between two equally compatible nouns by itself.
Where does the negative apply?
No confirmation
La coopérative ne confirme pas la livraison.
La coopérative
Source institution
ne confirme pas
Does not confirm
la livraison.
Event lacking confirmation
Nonoccurrence confirmed
La coopérative confirme que la livraison n'a pas eu lieu.
La coopérative confirme
Source affirms this content
que la livraison
Que introduces the content; la livraison is its subject
n'a pas eu lieu.
Delivery did not occur
The first fictional sentence negates confirmation. The second places nonoccurrence inside the content confirmed, so moving the negative would change the report substantially.
Finally, separate missing evidence in this text from evidence of absence everywhere. Aucun relevé n'est publié means no record is published. It does not mean no record exists. Le relevé est provisoire means the record is provisional, not necessarily wrong. In a claim map, retain those exact limits alongside the event and source. This prevents two opposite mistakes, adopting a source's position as fact and dismissing it as false merely because verification is incomplete. Reading the qualification correctly does not settle the underlying real-world dispute.

Test the boundary of an attributed statement
The Source and Unconfirmed past report cases ask about different relationships. One targets words assigning responsibility for a claim; the other targets a verb group marking distance from an event. Use the visible sentence to decide which relationship the prompt names before selecting a segment. Check selection evaluates that authored choice, not your beliefs about the institution. After checking, explain in English what the selected wording licenses and what remains unverified. That explanation tests a distinction the button result alone cannot show, attribution versus the truth of attributed content.
Apply that distinction to a fresh fictional example, Selon le gardien, trois fenêtres auraient été cassées. Le gardien means the caretaker, fenêtres windows, and cassées broken. The source is the caretaker. The windows are the grammatical subject of a passive event, not the people doing the breaking. The past conditional passive auraient été cassées reports alleged damage with distance. Nothing identifies who broke them. Recovering both source and event structure prevents a summary from assigning the breaking to the person who merely reported it.
Evidence for which proposition?
French wording
Reading consequence
Selon le gardien, trois fenêtres auraient été cassées.
Caretaker supplies the damage report.
Une voisine affirme avoir entendu du bruit.
Neighbour claims hearing, not seeing damage occur.
La police confirme les dégâts, mais pas leur origine.
Police confirms damage only.
The fictional sources address overlapping but different propositions. Confirmation of damage does not identify its cause, and claimed hearing does not establish eyewitness observation.
Continue the invented account with Une voisine affirme avoir entendu du bruit. Une voisine is a neighbour, entendu heard, and du bruit noise. The construction affirme avoir entendu says she asserts that she heard something earlier. It does not contain a new finite verb after affirme; avoir entendu is a compound infinitive describing the prior hearing. Her claimed hearing may be relevant, but hearing noise is not the same evidence as seeing someone break windows. Keep the content of each testimony narrower than the event under discussion.
Suppose the next sentence reads La police confirme les dégâts, mais pas leur origine. Les dégâts means damage and leur origine its origin or cause. The confirmation applies to damage, while the cause remains outside that confirmation. It neither endorses every detail of the caretaker's account nor identifies a culprit. This is a useful contrast between corroborating part of a report and corroborating all of it. A later sentence can strengthen one proposition while leaving other propositions provisional. Track the shared event without merging every source's responsibility.
Return to a worked-structure reveal only after making your own source and event distinction. Reset this case clears the selection and closes that reveal; it does not change the example. You can then state a short qualified account without copying its annotation. In the window example, a defensible account would separate reported damage, the neighbour's narrower testimony, and the police's limited confirmation. Do not treat a successful check on a curated case as evidence that your free-form account has been automatically evaluated. The controls do not perform that task.
A source is not automatically an actor
Actor omitted
Selon le gardien, trois fenêtres auraient été cassées.
Selon le gardien,
Source of the report
trois fenêtres
Subject receiving damage
auraient été cassées.
Distanced passive event, actor unnamed
Actor explicitly alleged
Selon le gardien, un visiteur aurait cassé trois fenêtres.
Selon le gardien,
Source of the report
un visiteur
Alleged actor and grammatical subject
aurait cassé
Distanced active event
trois fenêtres.
Objects allegedly broken
The passive names the damaged windows as its subject. The active counterpart names a breaker, while the attribution phrase still names only the reporting source.
For a final boundary check, compare an affirmative claim with its negative or missing-confirmation counterpart. Ask whether your English wording preserves the source, event time, and limits that actually change the interpretation. Keep these as distinct questions rather than replacing them with a general judgment that the news is uncertain. If the source is clear but the actor unknown, say exactly that. If the claim is a forecast rather than an accomplished act, keep it future. Precise reading can resolve the language while leaving the facts unsettled.
