Follow the argument
Read contrast, purpose, and causal claims without strengthening them.
Prerequisite: the earlier lessons in this course, especially pronoun references and verb groups. Use the previous link if these are unfamiliar.
You can answer in English. Keep the translation closed for your first attempt. Dictionary use is compatible with independent reading; a successful exercise is not a fluency certificate.
Read before the explanation
Read for the main meaning first. Then consider this question: Give one advantage and one limitation of the route. Has reduced waiting been established?
First reading · Original course text · about 74 words
Vocabulary for this passage
un trajet
a route or journey
un retard
a delay
desservir
to serve a place
un arrêt
a stop
un essai
a trial
un bilan
an assessment
English reading, after your attempt
The city changed the bus route to reduce delays. The route is shorter. Yet passengers still wait a long time in the morning. According to the company, roadworks slow traffic. The new route serves fewer stops; on the other hand, it goes near the hospital. Despite criticism, the city is keeping the trial for a month. It will then publish an assessment. For now, no figures allow waiting times to be compared.

Distinguish the relationship
Pourtant, toutefois, and cependant often mark a contrast with an expectation. En revanche contrasts aspects: a service can be slow but cheap. Alors que may contrast two situations or indicate simultaneous time. Malgré takes a noun phrase; bien que introduces a clause with a subjunctive. Read what follows the connector.
Read the relationship between complete claims
A connector tells you how one part of a text relates to another. In this fictional news example, Le marché attire du monde. Pourtant, plusieurs étals restent vides, le marché means the market, attire du monde attracts people, and étals stalls. Both statements can be true. Pourtant marks a result contrary to an expectation, perhaps that a busy market would have occupied stalls. It does not negate the visitor claim. The reader must retain the attendance and the empty stalls rather than choosing one as the correct description.
This relationship is a concession, an admitted point that does not lead to the expected conclusion. Compare the fictional statement Le marché est fréquenté, mais les ventes restent faibles. Fréquenté means well attended, les ventes sales, and faibles weak. High attendance might suggest strong sales, but the second part blocks that inference. The text does not claim visitors bought nothing. Weak sales are lower than some relevant expectation or comparison, not necessarily zero. Read the actual strength of each statement before deciding what the connector contrasts.
Contrast is not contradiction
French wording
Reading consequence
Le marché attire du monde. Pourtant, des étals restent vides.
Attendance does not ensure every stall is occupied.
Les fruits sont chers ; en revanche, les légumes sont bon marché.
Two product categories differ.
Certains gagnent davantage, alors que d'autres gagnent moins.
Two groups have different outcomes.
These fictional pairs compare attendance, sales, and prices on different dimensions. Each connector explains a relationship without making either statement automatically cancel the other.
En revanche often compares different aspects or situations rather than defeating an expectation. In Les fruits sont chers ; en revanche, les légumes sont bon marché, fruits are fruit, légumes vegetables, chers expensive, and bon marché inexpensive. Fruit prices and vegetable prices differ. There is no contradiction to repair because the statements concern different goods. An English summary saying all produce is expensive loses the contrast. A summary saying vegetables are cheaper than fruit may be plausible, but the French directly describes each category rather than giving a numerical price difference.
The connector alors que needs more context. In Le gardien ferme la grille alors que les vendeurs rangent leurs caisses, la grille means the gate, vendeurs sellers, and rangent leurs caisses put away their crates. The actions can be simultaneous. In Certains vendeurs gagnent davantage, alors que d'autres gagnent moins, gagnent means earn and d'autres others. The sentence primarily contrasts groups. Time overlap and contrast can coexist, so do not force every occurrence into one exclusive category. Inspect what the two clauses actually compare.
A clause is a group organized around a verb and its subject. Malgré la pluie, le marché reste ouvert uses a noun group after malgré, despite. La pluie means rain and reste ouvert stays open. A longer version can use bien que, although, followed by a clause. You will study the subjunctive forms often found there later. For now, identify the concessive relationship without treating an unfamiliar form as proof of doubt. A sentence can concede a real obstacle while stating that the expected closure did not follow.
Time overlap and group contrast
Concurrent activities
Le gardien ferme la grille alors que les vendeurs rangent leurs caisses.
Le gardien ferme la grille
Gate-closing action
alors que
Introduces concurrent activity here
les vendeurs rangent leurs caisses.
Sellers put crates away
Contrasting outcomes
Certains vendeurs gagnent davantage, alors que d'autres gagnent moins.
Certains vendeurs gagnent davantage,
Higher earnings for one group
alors que
Introduces group contrast here
d'autres gagnent moins.
Lower earnings for another group
The words following the connector determine the relevant relationship. Simultaneous activity and contrasting outcomes are both possible readings of this common construction in context.
The expected connection is sometimes supplied by common knowledge rather than explicitly stated. Rain may discourage an outdoor market, but grammar does not prove that rain always reduces attendance. Pourtant tells you the writer presents an expectation as relevant. It does not establish that expectation as a universal law. When summarizing a contrast, state the two facts or claims and the relationship the writer gives them. If the intended expectation remains unclear, describe the contrast without inventing an unstated motive or a necessary causal rule.
Read purpose separately from success
Pour and afin de followed by an infinitive introduce purpose. The fact that a city changes a route afin de réduire les retards does not prove delays fell. Parce que states a reason; donc presents a consequence or inference. The writer’s causal claim still needs evidence outside grammar.
Separate an aim, a reason, and a consequence
Purpose is what an action is intended to achieve. In the fictional sentence La boulangerie installe un auvent afin de protéger les clients, la boulangerie means the bakery, un auvent an awning, and protéger protect. The intended protection explains why the bakery installs the awning. Afin de introduces an infinitive, the dictionary-like verb form, rather than another finite verb with its own subject. The bakery controls the installation and intends the protection. This construction does not say whether every customer actually stays dry afterward.
A result needs separate wording. Continue the invented example with Mais la pluie atteint encore la file. Atteint means reaches, encore still, and la file the queue. The purpose remains protection even though rain continues to reach waiting customers. A reader who interprets afin de protéger as proof of successful protection will find a contradiction that the text does not contain. The failure belongs to the outcome, not to the grammatical purpose. A plan can have a clear goal and an incomplete or unsuccessful result.
Aim, explanation, and outcome
French wording
Reading consequence
Elle installe un auvent afin de protéger les clients.
Intended protection.
Elle ferme parce que le four est en panne.
Stated reason for closing.
Le four est en panne ; donc, la production sera réduite.
Predicted consequence or inference.
The fictional bakery examples place similar vocabulary in different relationships. The connector identifies intention, a stated reason, or an inference rather than guaranteeing practical success.
A reason looks backward to explain an action or situation. La boulangerie ferme tôt parce que le four est en panne says the bakery closes early because the oven is broken. Le four means the oven, en panne out of order, and tôt early. The parce que clause supplies the stated reason for closing. Unlike the purpose example, it contains a finite verb, est, with its own subject. This grammatical distinction helps you group the words, but the claimed causal explanation still belongs to the fictional report.
An inference draws a conclusion from something presented as a reason. In Le four est en panne ; donc, la production sera réduite, la production means production and réduite reduced. Donc presents reduced production as a consequence or conclusion. It does not demonstrate that no spare oven exists. A writer can make a reasonable inference, a weak inference, or an attributed inference using the same connector. Read the direction of the argument first, then ask whether the passage supplies the missing practical assumptions needed to support it.
Attribution can include a causal explanation. Selon la gérante, les ventes baissent parce que la rue est barrée contains la gérante, the manager, baissent, fall, and la rue est barrée, the street is blocked. The manager links the sales decline to blocked access. Do not rewrite it as the reporter proving that explanation. Even if sales and access restrictions occur together, the cause remains attributed. The sentence supplies a causal claim, not a comparison that rules out every other cause such as changed opening hours or competition.
A purpose can coexist with failure
Intended effect
La boulangerie installe un auvent afin de protéger les clients.
La boulangerie installe un auvent
Installation action
afin de protéger les clients.
Purpose with infinitive, not confirmed success
Remaining outcome
Mais la pluie atteint encore la file.
Mais
Contrast with intended protection
la pluie
Subject causing wet conditions
atteint encore
Continuing reach of rain
la file.
Queue still affected
The infinitive names the intended effect of installation. The following statement describes the remaining problem, so a failed outcome does not erase the original purpose.
Other expressions carry evaluations of the reason. Grâce à means thanks to and usually presents a beneficial contribution; à cause de means because of and often frames the cause unfavorably. In a fictional report, grâce au nouvel auvent and à cause du nouvel auvent would signal different evaluations of the same awning. Neither phrase supplies an experimental test. Preserve the evaluation when it matters, but keep the event, claimed causal link, and speaker distinct. A favorable connector is evidence of framing, not independent evidence of effectiveness.
Watch repeated small words
Encore can mean still or again; toujours can mean always or still. Déjà means already; pourtant can mean and yet rather than therefore. Follow the evolving situation across sentences. A useful summary preserves the main concession instead of choosing only the reassuring half.
Read continuation, repetition, and restricted conclusions
Small time words can change the argument without changing the main event verb. In the fictional sentence Le laboratoire cherche encore une solution, le laboratoire means the laboratory, cherche seeks, and une solution a solution. Encore here means still. The search continues. In Le laboratoire teste encore la même batterie, teste means tests and la même batterie the same battery. Depending on context, encore can indicate another test or continued testing. The word alone does not tell you whether this is a repeated event or an ongoing one.
Context can settle the distinction. Après un premier échec, l'équipe essaie encore means that after a first failure the team tries again. Depuis lundi, l'équipe cherche encore une solution presents a search still continuing since Monday. Échec means failure and depuis lundi since Monday. Neither expression tells you that success has occurred. Be careful when the surrounding paragraph discusses improvement. Continued effort can coexist with progress, but it is not itself a successful result. The event's grammatical continuation and the writer's evaluation answer different questions.
Which situation continues?
French wording
Reading consequence
Après un échec, elle essaie encore.
Another attempt.
La porte est toujours bloquée.
The stuck state persists.
Le délai a diminué, mais il existe encore.
Reduced delay remains nonzero.
Le service ne fonctionne que le matin.
Operation restricted to mornings.
Continuation, repetition, restriction, and negation change different parts of a claim. Keep each reading tied to its context instead of treating all small words as emphasis.
Toujours can mean always or still. In Le magasin ferme toujours à dix-huit heures, le magasin means the shop and ferme closes. The sentence normally describes a regular closing time. In Malgré la réparation, la porte est toujours bloquée, la réparation is the repair, la porte the door, and bloquée stuck. Here the obstacle persists despite repair. Toujours does not give a rule that doors are eternally stuck. The concessive phrase makes persistence at the current point the relevant interpretation rather than an unrestricted generalization.
Negation can narrow an apparent improvement. The fictional statement Le délai a diminué, mais il n'a pas disparu contains le délai, the waiting period, diminué, decreased, and disparu, disappeared. A smaller delay is not zero delay. Likewise Le service ne fonctionne que le matin restricts operation to mornings; it does not negate operation altogether. Ne...que means only in this construction. A summary that says service does not work reverses the restriction. A summary that says the service is now fully available erases its time limit.
A conclusion can apply to one dimension only. Le nouveau réfrigérateur consomme moins ; il reste toutefois plus cher means the new refrigerator consumes less but remains more expensive. Consomme concerns consumption, and plus cher higher price. The unspecified comparison must come from context, perhaps an older model. You cannot conclude that every buyer saves money overall without knowing purchase cost, energy use, and period of ownership. The grammatical contrast preserves a trade-off. It does not calculate the combined financial outcome or identify which criterion matters most to a reader.
A favorable result with a stated limit
Present evaluation
Le résultat est encourageant.
Le résultat
Finding under discussion
est encourageant.
Favorable evaluation
Evidence limit
Toutefois, aucun suivi à long terme n'est disponible.
Toutefois,
Qualification of what can follow
aucun suivi à long terme
Missing long-term evidence
n'est disponible.
Availability denied
The second sentence limits the evidence for durability, not the existence of the encouraging result. Both propositions belong in an account of this fictional finding.
Watch for a final sentence that limits earlier optimistic language. Le résultat est encourageant. Toutefois, aucun suivi à long terme n'est disponible uses encourageant, encouraging, and un suivi à long terme, long-term follow-up. The initial evaluation and the missing follow-up can both stand. Toutefois does not retract the result; it restricts what can be concluded from it. A faithful account can report the favorable early finding while refusing to promise durability. The last qualification is part of the argument, not an optional detail after its apparent conclusion.

Observed description

Use the contrast to diagnose a reading error
In the Purpose case, identify which part names an aim rather than an observed result. In the Contrast case, the prompt asks for the connecting relationship rather than either outcome alone. Select a segment, then use Check selection before opening Worked sentence structure. The useful explanation is why a different segment would answer a different question. A noun naming an affected thing cannot by itself tell you whether the writer asserts a cause, an aim, or a concession. Those relationships require the connector and the words it connects.
Try the same distinction on a fresh fictional report, La ferme couvre les cultures pour limiter les dégâts du gel. La ferme means the farm, cultures crops, limiter limit, and les dégâts du gel frost damage. Pour limiter names the intended effect of covering. It does not quantify damage prevented. The infinitive belongs with its purpose phrase, not with a newly invented subject. In this construction the farm carries out the covering to protect crops. Reading the intention accurately leaves the outcome open until the report supplies more evidence.
What kind of evidence does the sentence offer?
French wording
Reading consequence
La ferme couvre les cultures pour limiter les dégâts.
Purpose, not a measured reduction.
Certaines feuilles sont pourtant abîmées.
Some damage remains despite protection.
Sans protection, les pertes auraient été plus importantes.
Hypothetical comparison.
Les parcelles non couvertes ont subi davantage de dégâts.
Comparison outcome presented as observed.
All examples describe an invented frost-protection case. The wording distinguishes an aim, remaining damage, an imagined alternative, and a described comparison without evaluating farming effectiveness.
Now add Certaines feuilles sont pourtant abîmées. Certaines feuilles means some leaves and abîmées damaged. The sentence concedes remaining damage despite the protective action. It does not establish that covering was useless; perhaps uncovered plants suffered more. Nor does it establish that covering worked, because no comparison is given. The word certaines also limits the claim to some leaves. The text supports incomplete protection as described, but it does not support universal failure, a numerical damage reduction, or an explanation of exactly why those leaves were affected.
Suppose the fictional farmer says Sans cette protection, les pertes auraient été plus importantes. Les pertes means losses, cette protection this protection, and plus importantes greater in this context. This is a hypothetical past comparison. It states what the farmer thinks would have happened without covering. The conditional does not turn imagined uncovered losses into observed data. Compare this with Les parcelles non couvertes ont subi davantage de dégâts, where parcelles means plots and ont subi suffered. The second describes a comparison outcome, though its fairness still requires context.
This comparison helps distinguish language comprehension from evaluating an argument. Recognizing sans and the conditional establishes that one sentence concerns an imagined alternative. It does not determine whether the farmer's belief is right. Recognizing a description of uncovered plots establishes what comparison the text claims to observe. It does not establish equal soil, weather exposure, or crop type. Those are questions about evidence beyond the connector. A careful reading first preserves what kind of evidence is offered, so later criticism addresses the actual claim rather than a strengthened substitute.
Observed damage versus an alternative past
Described outcome
Certaines feuilles sont pourtant abîmées.
Certaines feuilles
Some leaves, not all crops
sont pourtant abîmées.
Remaining damage contrary to expectation
Imagined alternative
Sans cette protection, les pertes auraient été plus importantes.
Sans cette protection,
Alternative absence of covering
les pertes
Subject of hypothetical comparison
auraient été plus importantes.
Greater losses imagined in past conditional
A described outcome and an imagined alternative have different evidential status. The past conditional supplies no direct measurement of losses in the alternative scenario.
When returning to the visible lab, use the worked annotation to check the relationship you identified, then close it and restate that relationship without quoting its label. The fixed segment task cannot grade an extended explanation of the farm example. It can help isolate a specific error, such as taking an intended effect for a measured effect. Keep that diagnosis narrow. An error about purpose calls for checking purpose wording; an error about encore calls for checking persistence or repetition. Different mistakes need different textual evidence, even within the same paragraph.
